James Mitchell is an inclusion researcher at WIDA and currently works on the Advancing Alternate English Language Learning Assessment (Advancing ALTELLA) project. His research focuses on English learners with significant cognitive disabilities and alternate English language proficiency assessment. He worked on the initial ALTELLA project, which aimed to apply lessons learned from research on successful instructional practices, accommodations, and assessing English learners and students with cognitive disabilities to inform alternate English language proficiency assessments.
James has previous experience teaching in the United States and abroad as an English language instructor in various academic and community contexts. He holds an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and a BA in Applied Linguistics from Portland State University in Portland, OR. His other research interests include diversity and inclusion in the classroom as well as emotion and affect in language learning.
