As the educational technology field begins to move towards increased personalized learning, many worry about the isolating effects of individual approaches to mastery-based learning. Learning is not just located “in the brain,” but reflects the social meanings of a particular group and context. In other words, individual learning is embedded within socio-cultural contexts.
Using the Four Act Structure (Setting Up Key Concepts, Building the Storyline, Creating a Group Payoff, and Reflecting on Learning), international educators will have the opportunity to experience how online discussions might be customized to best support and connect multilingual learners. Techniques to be explored include: built-in accessibility features, online discussion tables and learner roles, online text annotation, and use of Google powerpoint slides with embedded manipulatives.
This session will be presented by Lynn Shafer Willner, a member of the WIDA Assessment team who designed the alignment architecture, Language Expectations, and Proficiency Level Descriptors for the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition.
