(Europe afternoon/Asia evening session)
Linguistic equity must be central to conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in international school contexts. Deconstructing a school’s language policy and the underlying beliefs are essential pieces of DEIJ work as we shed light on the complex relationship between language, culture, and identity and how this relationship should inform equitable policies.
In this webinar, we will explore a possible framework for developing a school language policy. We will discuss critical questions facing international schools and explore the relationship between current research and perceived conflicts with stakeholder interests.
By the end of this session, participants will leave with a checklist for reviewing/developing a school language policy and an initial analysis of the current language ideologies at play within their schools.
This session will be presented by Esther Bettney, from the WIDA International Programs team and Matt Hajdun, assistant director of Learning for Language Development at The Columbus School in Medellin, Colombia.
