Introduction to Language-Focused Family Engagement

WIDA is excited to announce the first offering of a two-day workshop on language-focused family engagement. This workshop is open to early care and K-12 educators that serve multilingual children and youth. This interactive workshop introduces participants to language-focused family engagement, a unique approach to family engagement that consists of four pillars:

  1. An affirming asset-based approach
  2. The WIDA ABCs of Family Engagement
  3. Family language practices and goals
  4. School language practices and goals

Language-focused family engagement draws attention to language education that occurs in-and-out of school and promotes meaningful two-way communication with families about their children’s language learning and development.

Participants will be able to:

  • Justify the need for language-focused family engagement
  • Explain the four pillars of language-focused family engagement
  • Identify action steps for application in local settings
  • Target Audience: This workshop is open to early care and education (ECE) and K-12 educators who serve multilingual children and youth. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend with colleagues as a small team or with a partner.
