Back to School Institute

This three-day Back to School Institute was created with topics that build on each other so that educators end the week prepared with the tools and resources needed to support their multilingual language learners. Participants will begin the week learning the foundations necessary to differentiate their instruction for the diverse group of students within their classroom and learn more focused ways of approaching learning as the week progresses.

August 17: Differentiation for Linguistically Diverse Students Webinar

English language learners need instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs unique to learning an additional language and grade-appropriate content. Participants will approach the idea of differentiation of language from an asset-based perspective, recognizing that language learners bring many contributions to the school community.

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe how content, product, process, and environment are taken into account for language differentiation (we do address distance learning in this area)
  • Identify student language differentiation needs and supports based on proficiency levels
  • Describe the pathways for language differentiation (academic language)
  • Describe how scaffolds and supports engage language learners at various levels in the language of a lesson
  • Apply strategies to balance domains

August 18: Purposeful Lesson Planning for English Language Learners Webinar

This webinar is designed to enhance participants' lesson planning processes. Specifically, participants will focus on incorporating the WIDA Essential Actions into their lesson planning process to create contexts for meaningful language use within settings that integrate content and academic language learning. Throughout this process, participants will explore elements of the WIDA Standards and Assessment System as they design instruction that promotes students' content learning and language development.

Participants will be able to:

  • Explore and connect lesson planning considerations for language learners to your instructional context and develop plans for implementation.
  • Describe how the components of the WIDA Standards and Assessment System and the Essential Actions can support your lesson planning process.
  • Discuss ways to create meaningful contexts for language use connected to content concepts and skills.
  • Identify the academic language demands of teaching and learning in the content areas while considering student needs.

August 19: Introduction to Educator Collaboration Webinar

This introductory webinar provides an overview of collaborative methods and models for planning, instruction and assessment of multilingual learners. It is designed for individual teachers who collaborate, teams, teacher pairs or instructional coaches.

Participants will be able to:

  • Look at ways to discuss multilingual learners in a collaborative setting
  • Explore various models of co-teaching
  • Develop a shared understanding of academic language use within a collaborative setting
  • Consider ways to evaluate co-teaching
