The WIDA eSummit is a free virtual learning opportunity for educators in WIDA Consortium member states, territories and federal agencies. The live event was held October 12-30, 2020. Each week of the eSummit had a theme with three sessions (presented via webinars) relating to the weekly theme.
Webinar recordings and downloadable resources are available in the WIDA Secure Portal through January of 2021. Members of the WIDA Consortium are able to access the eSummit through the eLearning Center in the WIDA Secure Portal. A valid WIDA Secure Portal account is required to access the eLearning Center.
Week One: WIDA ELD Standards, 2020 Edition
Introduction to the WIDA ELD Standards, 2020 Edition
This session provides an orientation to the 2020 Edition of the WIDA ELD Standards. Participants in this session will get an advanced peek into what’s inside the document and learn how to access publications. We will cover key points around the release of the 2020 Edition, including: what ELD standards are/are not; reasons for the update; intended audiences; organization of the 2020 Edition; as well as other features of design and navigation such as Big Ideas, the WIDA ELD Standards Framework, and grade-level materials. We will explore important educator considerations for the 2020 Edition, such as:
- How can we envision the standards being applied to curriculum and instruction?
- What are some ideas for planning a transition to the 2020 Edition?

Understanding the New WIDA Key Language Uses – Inform, Narrate, Explain, and Argue
This session introduces K-12 educators of multilingual learners to the updated Key Language Uses (KLUs) – Inform, Narrate, Explain, and Argue. Participants will be able to identify common and unique linguistic and organizational features of each KLU, as well as how each KLU interacts with and builds on other KLUs; explore how each KLU appears across different content areas; and consider implications for classroom practice.

Collaborative Planning for Content and Language Integration
The WIDA ELD Standards, 2020 Edition, brings new practical ways for all educators working with multilingual learners to conceptualize the simultaneous development of content and language through asset-based, equitable and rigorous approaches in curricular design.
The bulk of the session will focus on this question: how can we envision implementation of the 2020 Edition to curricular units of study? We will follow along a hypothetical scenario where two teachers collaborate to incorporate systematic, explicit and sustained language development into a science unit of learning. We will share thinking prompts with participants, as well as a series of choices and steps the two collaborating teachers took – from this, participants will be able to envision application in their own contexts.
Participants are strongly encouraged to view the Introduction to the WIDA ELD Standards, 2020 Edition prior to joining this session.

Week Two: Teaching Multilingual Learners
Teaching Multilingual Learners During Extraordinary Times: WIDA Fellows’ Success Stories
The 2020-21 school year is like no other we have experienced. As teaching and learning must continue in the new realities, it is important for us to learn from each other what works and what does not. WIDA Fellows are a group of accomplished teachers from across the United States who have been meeting and sharing their experiences with each other over the past year. In this panel discussion, they will reflect on how they ensure quality education for their multilingual learners during these extraordinary times and share success stories from their efforts.

Analyzing Language Ideologies Through Stories
Join us for a Spanish-English bilingual session where we explore and expand on our understanding of emergent bilinguals’ assets and identities in bilingual instruction. Participants will critically reflect on their beliefs about language development through bilingual stories and think about how educators’ language ideologies influence the teaching and learning of bilingual contexts.

WIDA Guiding Principles in Action: What Students Can Do
Classrooms look different this school year. As many schools explore online and hybrid instruction, we can use the 2019 WIDA Guiding Principles of Language Development to identify some of the unique opportunities for multilingual learners in these new instructional environments. In this session, we will consider how the Guiding Principles can serve as a lens through which to view the student experience. We will share insights from educators across the global WIDA network and offer opportunities for participants to reflect on their own contexts.

Week Three: WIDA Assessments
Using WIDA Assessments Appropriately: ACCESS for ELLs, WIDA Screener, and WIDA MODEL
This session will describe the WIDA suite of English language proficiency tests; ACCESS for ELLs, WIDA Screener, and WIDA MODEL. The presenters will describe the intended uses of these assessments and how they fit within an integrated assessment system supporting English learners. Participants will learn how to use the WIDA suite of assessments in ways that are most beneficial for both students and educators. The presenters will help build awareness of which assessment to administer at the appropriate time so the test scores may be used appropriately to provide the information needed about students.

Introducing the New WIDA Screener for Kindergarten
This session will introduce the new WIDA Screener for Kindergarten, WIDA’s replacement for the K W-APT screener. The presenters will explain the design and content of the new test and participants will learn about key features of the new WIDA Screener for Kindergarten, including the item and task types across the four language domains. In addition, the presenters will explain how to train to administer and score WIDA Screener for Kindergarten. Finally, participants will gain an understanding of the various materials and resources that will be provided by WIDA to support consortium rollout of this new assessment.

WIDA MODEL: Learn More About Your Students’ English Language Skills
This session will explain the intended uses of WIDA MODEL, a flexible and effective way to learn more about your students’ English language skills. In 2020, WIDA released an updated online version of WIDA MODEL. The presenters will explain how this new version has been enhanced, along with describing how WIDA MODEL is connected to other WIDA assessments. Participants will gain a better understanding of how WIDA MODEL can be used to support educators and students in their own local contexts.
