MODEL Speaking test: Recordings needed to link MODEL to the CEFR

WIDA is collecting audio recordings of students taking the WIDA MODEL Online Speaking test. Recordings will help WIDA researchers link the MODEL Online test to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Can your school help? Sign up to share your students’ Speaking tests with WIDA. Participating schools will receive one free MODEL Online test administration added to their account for every Speaking test recording shared with WIDA.

Last month, WIDA shared plans to collaborate with international school educators in Madrid to link WIDA MODEL to the CEFR. At an in-person event in January 2023, educators will evaluate MODEL Online test content against CEFR descriptors. This will help WIDA determine how MODEL scale score ranges correspond to the different CEFR levels (A1 through C2). Linking MODEL scores to CEFR levels will provide MODEL users with additional information about their students’ language development, using a common scale that is meaningful worldwide.

To link the MODEL Speaking domain test to the CEFR, participating educators will need to listen to audio recordings of students responding to Speaking test tasks and evaluate students’ speaking performances in terms of how they align with CEFR levels.

That’s where you come in! WIDA needs help from international school educators to record MODEL Speaking tests and make this study possible.

Can your school provide audio recordings of students taking the WIDA MODEL Online Speaking test? Here’s what you need to know:

  • Interested schools will need to administer the summative version of the WIDA MODEL Online assessment to students in October and/or November 2022 and audio record the entirety of the Speaking domain test.
  • WIDA will provide detailed guidance for how to audio record Speaking tests using a secure, downloadable recording application provided by our partners at MetriTech. Test administrators will be able to upload recordings directly to a secure portal.
  • Audio recordings will be anonymized and securely stored throughout the duration of the linking study, then deleted once the work is complete. Only WIDA researchers and educators participating in the linking study will listen to the recordings.
  • WIDA is collecting Speaking test recordings for every MODEL Online grade-level cluster test (grades 1-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12).
  • WIDA needs Speaking test recordings of students at all proficiency levels (PLs) in Speaking, including students with PLs of 5 or 6 on the WIDA scale.
  • WIDA will provide an incentive to schools that provide audio recordings of student performances. Schools will receive one free MODEL Online test administration for every Speaking test recording shared.

Sign up here to register and WIDA will contact you with additional details.

There’s still time to volunteer to join WIDA in Madrid next January!

Want to participate in the linking study? WIDA will be evaluating applications from interested educators through September 18, 2022. Complete this survey to apply.
