Spotlight: Lynn Shafer Willner

Lynn Shafer Willner is a member of the WIDA Assessment team and has a demonstrated commitment to supporting international educators.

Lynn Shafer Willner is a member of the WIDA Assessment team and designed the alignment architecture, Language Expectations, and Proficiency Level Descriptors for the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework, 2020 Edition. She has a long-standing interest in supporting international school educators. In the early 2000s, while obtaining her Ph.D. at George Mason University (GMU), Lynn taught and worked in the GMU international teacher training program, FASTTRAIN. Prior to that, she taught ESL as part of an on-site summer program at the Casablanca American School.

In the past year, Lynn had the opportunity to connect with WIDA member schools who were participating in a pilot focus group, in preparation for the new WIDA Global Community of Practice. In response to a particular question about differentiation from one school, Lynn drew on her involvement in the development of the WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition to meet with the school and discuss possible next steps.

Professionally, Lynn’s been having fun exploring the resources for argumentation in Social Studies at Read.Inquire.Write and attending Theresa Wills’ Mathurdays (Free Saturday Math PD Sessions for Teachers).

Lynn regularly publishes articles for practicing teachers based on her expertise in standards and for supporting multilingual learners with language disabilities. Read some of her most recent publications below which are well-suited for the international school audience.
