In August we introduced Mr. Vega, an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher and one of his multilingual students, Sophia. Find out how Mr. Vega continues to collaborate with colleagues, students, and families during  February.

Building on the momentum they have established, Mr. Vega and the 6th grade team review the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition and identify the language demands for content tasks across the curriculum. Mr. Vega then builds a co-teaching rotation with each teacher, outlining strategic in-class support for students and teachers. Grade 6 teachers incorporate scaffolding to support multilingual learners at different proficiency levels. Midway through the unit of study, the team uses the WIDA Proficiency Level Descriptors to co-assess student writing. Using the results from this assessment, they identify areas of strength and need for individual students. Finally, Mr. Vega and the team co-reflect to identify their success while examining ways they might strengthen their co-planning, co-assessing and co-teaching practices.
