In August we introduced Mr. Vega, an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher and one of his multilingual students, Sophia, on a learning journey over the course of a school year. Find out what Mr. Vega is doing in November.

Earlier this year Mr. Vega established a collaborative relationship with Sophia's science teacher, Ms. Jones, and the rest of the teachers on the 6th grade team. Now Ms. Jones and Mr. Vega work on strengthening their co-teaching partnership by co-planning a science unit. While planning they review the Can Do Student Portraits and the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards to create language objectives to support content objectives. WIDA Can Do Name Charts are used while creating strategic work groups, while allowing students to practice building English speaking proficiency and utilize home languages to engage with concepts and ideas. Mr. Vega and Ms. Jones create individual learning goals, leading Sophia towards presenting in English, while also using Ukranian to support her audience in understanding the information she presents.

Be sure to visit WIDA All Year Long and join Mr. Vega throughout the school year.
