FAQ series: WIDA ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition

The WIDA ELD Standards Framework team has released an FAQ series on the 2020 Edition. Based on questions from educators from across the world, this five-part series answers questions like What are the major shifts in the 2020 Edition? and How are the Key Language Uses (2020 Edition) different from the Can Do Descriptors, Key Uses Edition (2016)?

New courses added to micro-offerings series

The WIDA Professional Learning team has added two new micro-offerings to the free virtual learning series, Supporting Multilingual Learners During COVID-19. The additions include

  • Educational Equity for Multilingual Learners During COVID-19
  • Connecting Educators to Tools for Oral Language Development

The five-part series is designed to help educators navigate some of the nuances of teaching and supporting multilingual children and youth this school year. Each 30-minute learning opportunity provides educators with tools to effectively teach multilingual learners during the pandemic. New WIDA Focus Bulletin on promoting equity

The WIDA Early Years team has written a new Focus Bulletin titled Promoting Equity for Young Multilingual Children and Their Families, that offers ideas for taking a language-focused approach to equitable caregiving and instructional practice in early care and education (ECE) settings. The Focus Bulletin highlights voices from the field and offers reflection questions about what it means to promote equity for multilingual children and their families.

Supporting multilingual learners in hybrid classrooms 

This Edutopia article profiles a teacher “creating virtual interaction between students by bringing together home and school experiences to develop language skills.” See how she aligns her teaching to the vision of the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework, 2020 Edition.

A WIDA column in The International Educator, Are We Putting Out the Same Fires? Serving Multilingual Learners During the Pandemic, considers how a global network has supported teachers in serving multilingual learners during the global pandemic. Drawing on the knowledge and experience of a recently designed community of practice made up of international educators, they describe "Five Things We Can Do," an asset-based collection of high-leverage practices for teaching multilingual learners online.
