News Release: WIDA welcomes Dorene Uhrich as Chief Operating Officer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MADISON, Wis. – WIDA is pleased to announce that Dorene Uhrich has been named the organization’s new chief operating officer, effective August 4, 2025. Dorene joins WIDA from MindPlay Education, where she has served as chief operating officer since 2023.
With more than 16 years of experience in the education technology sector, Dorene brings a wealth of expertise in operational leadership and a deep understanding of organizations rooted in research and educational impact. She earned her multiple subject teaching credential in southern California and began her career in the classroom, where she learned first-hand how rewarding supporting multilingual learners can be — an experience that grounds her leadership in the realities of teaching and learning.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Dorene to WIDA,” said Dr. Jenni Torres, WIDA’s executive director. “Throughout the search process, Dorene impressed us with her depth of knowledge, strategic insight, and commitment to education. Her leadership will be instrumental as we continue to advance our mission to support educators and multilingual learners.”
Dorene’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for WIDA as the organization continues to grow and evolve in service of its mission.
“I’m thrilled to join the WIDA team and be part of an organization that celebrates the strength of multilingual learners,” Dorene said. “WIDA’s Can Do Philosophy and asset-based approach deeply resonate with me. They empower students to see themselves as capable, confident learners. I’m also honored to join such a thoughtful and mission-driven team that’s making a real difference in education.”
WIDA is an educational services organization within the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s School of Education that advances academic language development and academic achievement for multilingual children to help ensure the highest quality education.
