This tool supports multilingual learners in recognizing the four WIDA Key Language Uses (KLUs) – Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue – by helping students more easily identify the purpose of a text and better understand how authors use language to communicate different uses and meanings. Grounded in the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards Framework, 2020 Edition, this resource is aligned with the tool Exploring Key Language Uses Across Content Areas.

This resource is organized by the WIDA Key Language Uses (KLUs) and adapted from the ELD Standards Framework, 2020 Edition. The WIDA Language Charts connect WIDA ACCESS test scores to the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework and make the WIDA Proficiency Level Descriptors clearer, more actionable and directly connected to classroom instruction. Use this spreadsheet version to easily copy and paste information into your own spreadsheet tools, create personalized charts or customize the charts for individual or small groups.

Use the WIDA Language Charts to do the following:

• Share and discuss students’ expressive language (speaking and writing) and interpretive language (listening and reading) development with content teachers, coaches, counselors and administrators.
• Document progress of students’ language development; plan curriculum, instruction and classroom assessment; and invite individual teachers or teams to use information for making grade-level decisions.
• Supplement WIDA ACCESS scores with individual student samples to reveal a more comprehensive portrait of a student’s language development.
